As the seasons change, a subtle darkness casts its shadow over our well-being, manifesting as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Now I know I made that sound all poetic justice or whatnot, but we all know that seasonal depression is a real pain in the ‘you know what.’
Gem, as we confront the depths of seasonal depression, it’s vital for us to recognize that our internal beings, much like the external world, undergo seasonal shifts. By acknowledging and accepting the ebb and flow of our emotions, we lay the foundation for a more compassionate and understanding approach to self-healing. But as I mentioned previously, this process is a pain and far from easy. Please remember to be patient with yourself because the motions are one of the wildest rollercoaster rides.
It’s easy to overlook the minor nuances of our emotional well-being until they grow beyond easy control. Mindful awareness invites us to be present and in the moment, acknowledging our thoughts and feelings without judgment. Through practices like mindfulness meditation, we learn to observe the changing seasons within ourselves with kindness and GRACE. Yes, the emphasis on grace is loud because it’s necessary, and we all need to extend more to ourselves and others, especially during the winter and holiday season.
Seasonal depression often dims our inner light, hindering us from showing up as our complete selves. Personally, I tend to hide and lock myself inside during this time, which solves nothing. We should indulge in activities that nurture and kindle us, whether it's pursuing creative endeavors, connecting with loved ones, or engaging in hobbies that bring us joy. These moments become beacons, guiding us through the darker days and ultimately keeping us sane.
Nature has healing powers and can help restore us. Getting outside, taking a walk, inhaling the fresh air, and simply embracing the therapeutic benefits of spending time outdoors—immersing ourselves in the sights, sounds, and textures of the natural world—is more effective than you realize sometimes. Nature remains the cheat code and a powerful ally in our quest for inner balance.
Breaking free from the dreadful cocoon of seasonal depression requires courage and vulnerability. I would’ve mentioned strength, but sometimes that word bothers me because, damn, I’m tired. And you know what? It’s okay for us to be tired sometimes.
Gem, sharing our struggles with trusted friends or seeking professional support is not just a ‘studies show’ suggestion; it actually works and aids our minds. Opening up and sharing our struggles creates spaces for understanding and empathy, dispelling the isolation that often accompanies this seasonal loneliness.
Self-care goes beyond superficial rituals; it’s a holistic commitment to nurturing our physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Exploring practices that resonate with our inner self, whether gentle yoga, aromatherapy, a cool or warm bath/shower, or merely enjoying a mindful pause to savor a cup of tea, can do more for us than we think.
Gem, this isn’t easy, and I’m not trying to downplay the dedicated work it takes or how hard it is to overcome seasonal depression or any mental barriers; I only want us to try harder to save ourselves.
Within the darkest moments of seasonal depression, opportunities for profound transformation exist. Like the seasons, our lives are marked by renewal cycles, and even in the depths of winter, the promise of spring awaits. The sun will continue coming out for us; it’ll keep shining, and we must stop hiding from it.
